Shocking Miss: The U.S. Economy Added Just 266,000 Jobs in April, Unemployment Ticks Up

The U.S. economy added just 266,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate ticked up to 6.1 percent, the Labor Department said in its monthly labor assessment Friday, smashing expectations.

This was far below expectations. Analysts surveyed by Econoday had predicted Friday’s report would show between 755,000 and 1.25 million workers added to payrolls in April. The median forecast was for 938,000 and an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent.

The disappointing number for April could be a sign that hiring is being held back by enhanced unemployment benefits and schools that have not reopened full time, requiring some parents to stay home to take care of children. Many businesses say that they cannot hire enough workers to fill positions because of the government’s enhanced unemployment benefits program.

The economy has outperformed expectations on many metrics this year as vaccinations have boosted business and consumer confidence and restrictions on businesses have been lifted. Friday’s employment numbers represent a rare miss.

Starship Nails Landing For the First Time When the smoke cleared, the SpaceX rocket was still in one piece.

For the first time, SpaceX has successfully flown a prototype of Starship — the massive rocket it expects to one day ferry humans to Mars — high into the air and landed it in one piece.

What happened: On May 5, SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype (dubbed Serial Number 15, or SN15) lifted off from the company’s Texas test site at 6:24 p.m. EST.

It flew about six miles into the air before reversing course, executing a “belly flop” maneuver to slow its descent. About six minutes after launching, SN15 landed upright back on Earth.

A small fire broke out near the base of Starship after the landing, but it was soon extinguished — and when the smoke cleared, the rocket was still intact.

“Starship landing nominal!” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted.

Dad who yanked child from ‘woke’ Manhattan school says others are doing the same

A dad who yanked his daughter from her $43,000-per-year Manhattan private school in outrage over the “woke” teaching of critical race theory says other angry parents are now following his example — as he described the movement as a form of “child abuse.”

“Nobody I’ve spoken to believes this is good for children,” Harvey Goldman told The Post Wednesday. “I am personally hearing from a handful of parents who are also pulling their kids out of the school — and their friends are, too.”

Goldman said the Heschel School, on West End Avenue near 60th Street, has taught inappropriate lessons centering on race and gender, which many parents have no clue about.

Caitlyn Jenner, candidate for California governor, opposes transgendered biological boys competing in girls’ sports, TMZ revealed Saturday.

When asked by a reporter what Jenner thought of certain states that have passed legislation to protect girls’ sports from transgender biological boys participating in them, Jenner said, “This is a question of fairness.”

“That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school,” Jenner said.

“It just isn’t fair. And we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools, Jenner reiterated.

Trump call a “personality cult” or a wild group of “conspiracy kooks” is becoming a mature, well organized, and well thought out movement that began at our American Revolution in 1776 and exists today with people like General Mike Flynn and Political icon Roger Stone.

“This is a fight between good and evil. There is a path forward,” Stone said at a recent patriot rally in Florida, where Stone and Flynn together pushed back on the left’s narrative of “conspiracy” and called for people to engage in more political activism than ever to save America.

“MAGA Celebrities” are being joined by the MAGA working-class in unity to demand their individual sovereignty from an invasive government. It is a Populist movement. And it isn’t new at all. Populist, in part, means it includes Democrats and Republicans, and they are all mad as heck at Washington DC, just like they were in 1976.

App Can Detect Early Sign of Autism in Toddlers

Duke University has developed a smartphone app that can detect an early sign of autism in toddlers — potentially foreshadowing a future when the disorder can be flagged for parents with very young children, hopefully allowing earlier screening and treatment.

Why it matters: Autism isn’t curable, but it is treatable — behavior therapy and other interventions can reduce symptoms and help with a child’s overall development.

These treatments are most effective when a child is very young, but in the U.S., most children with autism aren’t diagnosed until after age four, even though the disorder can be diagnosed at just 14 months old.

This Startup’s Goal Is To Be the “Henry Ford of Space”

Phantom Space wants to mass produce rockets using parts made by other companies

Phantom Space, a startup founded by SpaceX veteran Jim Cantrell, is taking an “off-the-shelf” approach to building rockets, using parts created by other space companies to build rockets cheaper and faster.

“We want to be the Henry Ford of the space industry with mass production, while others in this space are focused on vertically integrating their technology and supply chain,” Cantrell said in a press release.

The challenge: It’s cheaper than ever to send a satellite or even a person into space, but it’s still not cheap.

If we can get to the point that practically anyone who wants access to space can afford it, though, it could be a major boon for science, entertainment, and more.

The science behind canola, vegetable oils

Why are some health-conscious people rejecting canola and other genetically-modified oil? Is there real science behind the counter-canola craze, or is it just another dieting fad?

According to Harvard expert Guy Crosby, soybean, canola, palm, and corn oil are the top four vegetable oils consumed in the United States. These oils are referred to as refined, bleached, deodorized oils (“RBD”), which describes the process by which they are manufactured — and they aren’t just in your curly fries. They’re in everything from bread, to pre-cooked chicken, as well as desserts and snacks. Even many avowed health products, like protein powder, are produced with one or more of these oils.

In the 50 years since canola oil was invented by Canadian scientists by genetically modifying the rapeseed plant to be edible by human beings, the product has been touted for its health benefits. This is due to its low saturated fat content. Saturated fats are what most nutritionists consider the “bad fats,” because they have been shown to increase overall cholesterol levels, especially LDL (low-density lipoprotein), the bad cholesterol. While naturally-occurring fats like butter contain 7.2 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon, canola boasts a mere 1.7 grams. For this reason, among others, many manufacturers who hadn’t already switched to canola and other GMO — genetically modified organism — oils had good reason to in 1990, when the FDA required nutrition labels on all packaged and sold food. With it’s low percentage of saturated fats, canola oil appeared to be healthier.

Yet canola and other genetically-produced oils have been connected to long-term ailments which the FDA-approved label doesn’t show, according to some nutritionists.

‘Breakfast Club’ Host DJ Envy Called a Race Traitor After Defending the Officer Who Shot Ma’Khia Bryant

Breakfast Club radio host DJ Envy is facing down a backlash after comments he made in support of the police officer who shot and killed Ma’Khia Bryant last week.

Last Friday, the hosts struck up a conversation about the April 20 incident in Columbus, Ohio, where a police officer shot Ma’Khia Bryant who was lungeing with a knife toward another girl. And as far as DJ Envy is concerned, the police officer was in a no-win situation, had seconds to act, and his actions were justifiable.

“Every case is different,” DJ Envy said. “And in this case, if I pull up to a scene and see a girl chasing another girl about to stab a girl, my job as a police officer is to make sure that girl doesn’t get killed. And the law allows me to stop that killing or that stabbing by any means necessary. That’s what the law allows me to do, on both sides.”
